Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) in Florida provide housing, meals, personal care, and support services to older adults who need help with daily activities but do not require the round-the-clock medical care of a nursing home. Florida has over 3,000 licensed ALFs — more than almost any other state.
What Services Do Florida ALFs Provide?
- Help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting
- Medication management and administration
- Three meals per day plus snacks
- Housekeeping and laundry
- Transportation to medical appointments
- Social activities and recreational programming
- 24-hour supervision and emergency response
Who Is Assisted Living Right For?
ALFs are a good fit for older adults who need daily assistance but are not medically complex. They’re ideal for someone who:
- Struggles with one or more Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) like bathing or dressing
- Would benefit from social interaction and structured activities
- Needs medication reminders or management
- Cannot safely live alone but does not need skilled nursing care
How Is Assisted Living Licensed in Florida?
Florida ALFs are licensed and inspected by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). There are three license categories:
- Standard ALF — Basic assisted living services
- Limited Nursing Services (LNS) — Can provide limited skilled nursing care on-site
- Extended Congregate Care (ECC) — Can serve residents with greater care needs who might otherwise require nursing home care
What Does Assisted Living Cost in Florida?
The average monthly cost of assisted living in Florida ranges from $2,500 to $5,500 depending on location, room type, and level of care. Most ALF residents pay privately. Florida’s Medicaid program (through the SMMC Long-Term Care waiver) does cover some ALF costs for eligible low-income seniors — ask a facility directly about their Medicaid status.
How to Choose the Right ALF
- Visit in person and observe staff interactions with residents
- Ask about staff-to-resident ratios, especially at night
- Review the facility’s AHCA inspection history
- Understand exactly what’s included in the monthly fee vs. what costs extra
- Ask about the discharge policy — under what circumstances would a resident need to leave?
